The next Tizen smart TV you buy may not be from Samsung – InsideCI

A new range of budget Tizen-based smart TVs will soon be appearing in the UK stores, but they won’t come from Samsung. The South Korean company has opened its popular TV OS to Linsar owner Tempo, as part of a new ‘Tizen TV by Samsung’ licensing program.

The first Tizen sets produced under the Tempo deal will make their debut in Aldi stores in a matter of weeks. They will ship into the UK, France, Italy, Spain, New Zealand and Australia.

Sydney based distributor Tempo has secured a global deal with Samsung’s head office to manufacture TV’s running the highly popular Smart TV Tizen operating system, reports Channel News.

The Tizen OS will appear in a variety of TV brands owned by the distributor, including Linsar, Bauhn and Akai. UK TV brand Linsar was acquired by Tempo International in 2016.

Aldi Australia is offering a 65-inch 4k Bauhn TV for AUS$669 (approximately £390).

The move not only widens the use of the Tizen OS, currently competing for users with LG’s webOS and Android TV, but significantly expands the reach of the IP delivered AVOD TV channel service, Samsung TV Plus.

Tizen is a Linux-based open source operating system, and currently has 190 million users in 197 countries. Tizen OS-powered devices include TVs, monitors and digital signage.
